Freedom Commissary

Army Capt. Kevin C. Landeck Freedom Commissary

The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans’ (MSHV) Capt. Kevin C. Landeck Freedom Commissary is the “free” thrift store designed to meet the clothing, household and basic needs of low income veterans and their families. The store serves veterans of all eras and branches.  Eligibility is based on household income and need. All provisions are made possible through the generosity of donors. The Commissary serves over 200 veteran households each year. Veterans are able to access the Commissary for items such as:

  • Casual and professional clothing for both men and women
  • Household items
  • Hygiene products
  • Cleaning products
  • Paper goods

Eligibility and Access to Services

In addition to being a veteran, individuals in need must be at or below 250% of poverty in order to access services. If a Veteran is unable to meet this requirement but has a legitimate reason for seeking services, he/she may contact the Director of Programs for assistance in meeting their needs.

Veterans who qualify may seek services from the Freedom Commissary in one of two ways:

Needs Assessment:

Completing an initial assessment of need is the first step needed to access the Commissary. MSHV staff review the following documentation to determine eligibility for shopping:

  • Copy of their DD214 or VA card
  • Each adult member of the household will need a photo ID
  • Birth certificates or social security cards will be needed for each child in the household.
  • Income documentation for the past 30 days.
  • For no income, the Veteran will be allowed to sign an income affidavit as legal declaration of such.

To make an appointment to complete an initial assessment call our Freedom Commissary Coordinator, John Dixon at  630-871-8387 x. 617.

Store Operation

The Freedom Commissary is managed by MSHV employees; however, we rely on dedicated volunteers to help serve our veterans. Volunteers serve several functions with the Commissary; they greet and help veterans with paperwork, unpack, and sort donations, keep the Commissary clean and organized during hours of operation, and much more. Please see our Volunteer section for specific volunteer opportunities.
